A One-Minute Calm Pause Before Math Practice

Math practice often starts straight after something busier: school, a screen, a disagreement. A short pause gives a child a moment to arrive before they are asked to think. It is a routine, not a treatment, and it is always optional.

The pause

Sit together. Do it with them rather than to them.

  1. Breathe in through the nose for a count of four.
  2. Breathe out slowly for a count of six.
  3. Repeat three or four times, then start the first problem.

Make it theirs

Some children like to hold a smooth stone or a block while they breathe. Some like to count on their fingers. Some would rather skip it. Offer it; do not insist.

Use it mid-session too

If a problem gets frustrating, a pause is a better next step than "try harder." Come back to the same problem afterwards, or a slightly easier one.

If a child is regularly very distressed by math or anything else, talk to their teacher or doctor. A breathing pause is a small daily habit, not professional support.
